How to Create a QR Code for WhatsApp
A WhatsApp QR code lets people start a chat with you by scanning it with their phone camera. They do not need to save your number or type it in. This is useful for small businesses, freelancers, event organisers and anyone who gets customer enquiries on WhatsApp.
Why use a WhatsApp QR code?
Typing a phone number correctly is easy to get wrong, and many people will not bother. A QR code removes that step. A customer sees your flyer, scans the code, and a chat with you opens straight away. You can place the code on:
- Shop windows and counters
- Flyers, posters and banners
- Business cards
- Delivery bags and packaging
- Your website and social media profiles
Step 1: Build your WhatsApp link
WhatsApp uses a simple link format called a click-to-chat link. It looks like this:
https://wa.me/234XXXXXXXXXX
Replace the X's with your full phone number in international format. That means:
- Start with the country code (for Nigeria, 234)
- Do not include a plus sign
- Do not include spaces, dashes or brackets
- Drop the leading zero of your local number
For example, if your number is 0803 123 4567, the link becomes https://wa.me/2348031234567.
Step 2: Add a pre-filled message (optional)
You can add a message that appears in the chat box when someone scans your code. Add ?text= to the end of the link, followed by your message. Use %20 in place of spaces.
Example:
https://wa.me/2348031234567?text=Hello%20I%20would%20like%20to%20place%20an%20order
This helps you know why a customer is messaging you and saves them from typing.
Step 3: Generate the QR code
- Open SnapQR.
- Paste your WhatsApp link into the input box.
- Generate the code.
- Download the image.
Step 4: Test before you print
Scan the code with your own phone and with a friend's phone. It should open a WhatsApp chat with your number. If it opens a blank page, re-check the number format. The most common mistakes are leaving the plus sign in or keeping the leading zero.
Tips for better results
- Add a short line of text next to the code, such as "Scan to chat with us on WhatsApp", so people know what it does.
- Keep the code at least 2 cm wide when printed.
- Use a business number you plan to keep. If you change your number later, the old printed codes will stop working for new customers.
- Consider a WhatsApp Business account if you receive many enquiries, since it adds a business profile and quick replies.
Final thoughts
A WhatsApp QR code takes only a couple of minutes to make and can save you and your customers a lot of time. Build your link, generate the code, test it, and put it where your customers will see it.
