How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone and Android
Scanning a QR code takes just a few seconds, and on modern phones you do not need any special app. This guide shows you how to do it on both iPhone and Android, and what to do if it does not work.
How to scan on an iPhone
- Open the Camera app.
- Point the camera at the QR code so that the whole code is visible on the screen.
- Hold steady for a moment. A yellow banner or notification appears at the top of the screen showing the link or action.
- Tap the banner to open it.
iPhones running iOS 11 or later support this. You do not need to press the shutter button. If nothing happens, make sure the camera is not in a special mode, and try moving closer or farther away.
How to scan on an Android phone
Most Android phones can scan QR codes directly:
- Open the Camera app and point it at the code. A link or pop-up often appears automatically. Tap it to open.
- If that does not work, open Google Lens, which is built into many Android phones, or search for it in the Google app. Point it at the code and tap the result.
- Some phones also have a QR scanner in the quick settings panel. Swipe down from the top and look for a QR code icon.
Menus differ between brands, such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Tecno and Infinix, but the basic method is the same.
Scanning from a screenshot or saved image
Sometimes the QR code is on your own screen, for example in a message or a saved image. You cannot point your camera at the same screen, so try these:
- iPhone: open the image in Photos, then touch and hold the code. A menu may appear offering to open the link.
- Android: open the image in Google Photos and tap the Lens button, or use Google Lens from the Google app and choose the image from your gallery.
- Alternatively, ask a friend to scan it from their phone.
Tips for a successful scan
- Keep your phone steady, about 10 to 30 cm from a small code.
- Make sure there is enough light. Use the flashlight in dim places.
- Clean your camera lens. A smudge can stop the scan.
- Hold the phone parallel to the code, not at a sharp angle.
- Make sure the entire code, including its border, fits on the screen.
- Avoid glare. Tilt the phone slightly if the surface is shiny.
What to do if your phone will not scan
- Update your phone's software and camera app.
- Try Google Lens or a trusted free QR scanner app.
- Check that the code is not damaged, torn or faded.
- Try scanning from a different distance.
- Ask the owner to check whether the code has a correct link.
Stay safe when scanning
Always read the link shown on your screen before you open it. If the address looks odd or unrelated to where you found the code, do not tap it. Never enter passwords or card details on a page you reached from an unknown code.
Summary
On both iPhone and Android, scanning is as easy as opening the camera and pointing it at the code. If that does not work, use Google Lens, improve the lighting, and keep the phone steady. Check the link before you open it, and you will be set.
